The first sit-down of the political party talks under the new formation is set to begin late this afternoon.
During the meeting to be held today from 4.00-6.00, it has been learned that firstly the participants would set down an agenda for the discussions as currently the representatives of the political parties would have to follow the previous six item agenda of the All Party Roadmap Talks.
Following the decision by the political parties during the sit-down initiated by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik held in Bandos Island Resort to change the formation of the political party talks, the subsequent discussions would be held under the name "leaders' dialogue."
The participants of the sit-down at Bandos Island Resort last night had agreed that the issues included in the discussions can only be resolved through the Parliament. To that end, it had been decided that the Leader’s Dialogue would be represented by the leader of a political party if the person is a Member of Parliament and if not the party’s parliamentary group leader would participate along with a nominee of President Waheed, Secretariat said.
President Waheed’s Advisor Hussain ‘Topi’ Thaufeeg has been designated as the President’s representative to the discussions.
Speaking to reporters after the sit-down of the heads of political parties in Bandos, President Waheed added that the decision to hold discussions through the Parliament had been made with the intention of achieving a positive result through constructive dialogue. He added that the Parliament being one of the places that needs to undertake the crucial work pending at the time as one of the reasons behind the decision.
Following the decision to change the formation of the discussions, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP), Jumhoory Party (JP) and People’s Alliance (PA) would be the only parties that can partake in the sit-downs.
