Mega Maldives airlines added a new destination to its ever-expanding route when its inaugural flight to the relatively unknown country of Palau landed at the Koror international airport on Monday.

The Airbus 757 flight which came via Hong Kong was a given a water cannon salute as it landed in the archipelago of 300 islands located in the western Pacific Ocean.

Speaking during a ceremony held at the airport, Palau state minister Billy Kuartei welcomed the inaugural flight to Palau and pointed out that the introduction of scheduled flights by the Maldives-based airline proved the extraordinary cooperation between the Palau local partners and mega global air services.

"This is yet another milestone that is expected to bolster tourism and commercial between Palau and Hong Kong and other destinations," the prominent figure of the Palau government said.

"This occasion would further strengthen Palau's position as an emerging hub for airline and hopefully in the future in the Pacific region."

Co-founder and CEO of Mega Maldives George Weinmann explained that the new destination was part of the airline's ambition for expansion as a tourism-focused airline.

"What we are leveraging here is our know how in dealing with Chinese customers and our understanding of what an island destination needs," he said.

Weinmann further said the airline's success in the Maldives since its inception four years ago, provides an attractive proposition for other similar destinations such as Palau.

Mega Maldives is scheduled to fly to Palau via Hong Kong twice a week. A local media contingent, including state television station TVM and private outlets, was invited to visit Palau on the inaugural flight.
