Addu Parliament members on Monday called for the release of Feydhoo councilor Ahmed 'Mira' Mirzad, who was arrested on suspicion of hurling rocks at the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) vehicles as it passed the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) camp in Feydhoo.

North-Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam said that councilors are politicians and that arresting them for investigation is not the best practice. The detention period for Mirzad has been extended by a further 10 days.

“Investigation can be carried out without keeping him in detention. I call for him to be released immediately” Aslam said.

Jumhoory Party’s Feydhoo MP Alhan Fahmy expressed grave concern over the detention of Mirzad.

“It is a great setback to the development of Addu. Mirzad is someone who plays a vital role in the development of Addu. He should be released,” Alhan said.

Jumhoory Party Maradhoo constituency MP Hassan Adil said that detaining Mirzad for an extended period will cause considerable damage as he is someone who works closely with the youth of Addu.

“He is the person who works most for the development of Addu’s youth. His investigation can be carried out even without being in custody,” Adhil said.

Mirzad had been arrested on several occasions regarding suspicions of some major violence after the downfall of former President Mohamed Nasheed’s government, including the arson of police buildings and courts.

Mirzad was arrested on suspicion of hurling rocks at the PPM vehicles as well as police vehicles while he was at the MDP Feydhoo office. Others were also arrested in relation to the incident.
