MALE, Aug 30 (HNS) -- Fuvahmulah has been provided with the mobile phone service which was officially launched by the Minister of Education and the Chairman of Dhiraagu’s directors’ board, Ismail Shafeeu, by making a phone call on his mobile to the Atoll Chief of Fuvahmulah.

“I ask the people of Fuvahmulah to use the service in the most beneficial way,” said Shafeeu.

In the function, Ismail Waheed, the Chief Executive Officer of Dhiraagu, said it was a great success for Dhiraagu to provide mobile phone service to the only atoll in the Maldives that exists as a single island.

Many people in the island, with a population of 9,000, had started getting the service that was provided through the satellite earth station that was set up in Hithadhoo island of Addu atoll.

Before the service was officially launched, many people of Fuvahmulah had been using the service. After the introduction of the mobile phone service, two teams of Dhiraagu will be engaged in selling prepaid connection kits in the atoll.

Since Dhiraagu introduced the GSM mobile phone systems in the Maldives in 1999, more than 50,000 people or 73 percent of the Maldives population are using the service.
