In the video which is being circulated on mobile phones, the nude girl is seen tied to a tree as she screams for help while the torturers continue to assault her.
A police official said that the incident occurred on the 1st of this month in the woods of Male’s satellite town Vilingili, which already has become a nest for heroin abuse and trafficking though police are stationed there.
Police said that the case was filed on the 8th of this month.
The grade 9 student was said to have gone to Vilingili without her guardians’ knowledge.
“We cannot reveal any further details than this,” the police official said.
Critics say that the Maldives’ justice system fails to address issues of abuse of women and children. According to figures, Maldives may already be the country with the highest child abuse record.
This case comes in the wake of two recent cases where the civil court passed lenient sentences on some pedophiles which have caused public outrage.
Police has so far refused to identify the assailants or release their photos to the public.
