“None of my kids went to sleep last night,” mother of two, Fathmath Naseem said. “They are both scared. This is the first time that the island has experienced such a frightening thing. Some of the people in the nearby islands also stayed up all night. I don’t think anyone in the island managed to get any sleep last night.”
After the discovery of Mogul Hussain’s body which had been castrated, disembowelled and stabbed several times, the whole island seems to have lost its very spirit. People seem reluctant to go out and about, especially after sunset, giving the island an abandoned feel. Life on Kulhudhuffushi seems to have come to a standstill.
“Last night there were practically no sales,” said a shop owner in Kulhudhuffushi said. “Only a handful of people came to the shop while it was open from around 8:00pm to 11:00pm.”
There are other reasons why the people of the island are so scared.
“The main reason we are so scared is because the corpse is still being kept in the island,” said a middle-aged man named Ali Hassan on Monday. “Keeping a corpse without burying it for long is something that scares me. Our wish is that the corpse be buried as soon as possible.”
A large number of expatriate workers still remain on the island, having arrived there on various projects. Since a number of them are Bangladeshis the residents of the island also fear that some form of retaliation might come from them.
“This is a huge psychological blow to our children,” a teacher from Kulhudhuffushi said. “Some of the children have lost their appetite and can’t even sleep. A lot of the school children are also scared.”
Moguls’ body had been sent to Male early Tuesday morning. The news came as some amount of comfort for some of the residents, a large number of which had visited the site of the murder at the football stadium to see Mogul’s mutilated body. The murder which had occurred just a day after the hectic referendum voting had closed has left most of the residents in shock and seemingly numb. This is the first time that a crime of such brutality has happened in Kulhudhuffushi.
