The NCB said in a statement that although there were no traces of any narcotic drugs in the drink, the NCB believed that the name of the brand and the phrases used in promotions and advertisement for the product encouraged people to abuse its namesake drug.
Under Maldivian law, encouraging and promoting the use of narcotic drugs in writing or drawing, and publishing or keeping such items in view of the public, was a criminal offence.
The statement by the NCB also banned the import and dealing of products, in addition to the Black Opium label, that encouraged, promoted or had a similar name as that of a narcotic drug.
Black Opium Energy Drinks had been available at vending machines in Male. Various brands of non-alcoholic beer are also available at local shops.
