The Deputy Director of the Ministry, Mohamed Azim Abdulla, said that the rate of Rf 15 that had been set on taxis since 18 October 2004 had been raised due to the rising oil prices.
“Before setting a new rate for taxis we took into consideration the price of items when the last time that taxi fares had been raised,” Azim said. “As such the price of fuel since the last time we raised the taxi rates has increased by 83.7 percent. And the inflation rate in 2004 was -1.7, whereas the inflation by 2006 has increased to 2.7. So when we raised the rates we did not just take into consideration what the taxi drivers had suggested. We were looking for a supportable adjustment rate.”
Azim said from their calculations they had realised that they needed to raise the prices by 27.16 percent. He said that from Saturday onwards the rate of taxi rides between 6:00am and 12:00am will be raised to Rf 20; a 33 percent increase. Those who used taxi services between 12:00am and 6:00am will have to pay Rf 25. The cost of placing luggage and other items in the luggage compartment has not changed.
Azim also said that in addition to individual taxi rides the rate for renting out taxis on hourly basis had also increased. The cost of hiring a taxi for one hour, which had earlier cost Rf 80, was now raised to Rf 110. Hiring taxis for six hours, which had earlier cost Rf 425, will now be Rf 550. Hiring a taxi for 12 hours will now cost Rf 840; earlier it had been Rf 660. Hiring a taxi for 24 hours now costs Rf 1400. It had earlier cost Rf 1100.
In addition to the changes in taxi fares, the monthly fee of Rf 425 charged from Taxi Centres for each of their taxis has been raised to Rf 600.
