MALE, January 8, 2008 (Haveeru News Service) -- The scout student who thwarted a planned knife attack on President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom today morning is being treated at the health center in Haa Alifu atoll Hoarafushi island.

Mohamed Jaisham, 16, thwarted the attack by holding onto the knife when attacker Mohamed Mursheed brought out the knife hidden inside a national flag. As a result, Jaisham received serious injuries to his hand.

The Islamic Democratic Party condemned the planned knife attack on the President; IDP's Vice President Mohamed Hassan Maniku said that such acts should not be committed at a time when Maldives is undergoing a democratization process.

State broadcaster Television Maldives said that the President will shortly address the nation through TV and radio after surviving the knife attack.

Mursheed, 20, a resident of Hoarafushi, tried to attack the President when the President arrived in Hoarafushi this morning during the President’s tour of some northern islands.

Mursheed is now under custody.
