However, the motion failed to pass because it was not a majority from the 99 MPs present at the interim constitutional assembly. Thus, the Majlis adopted the motion to remove the gender bar to Presidential office.
The current Constitution states that only a man can become President and that he should not be married to a foreigner.
The Majlis also yesterday passed a motion by which a person who has a foreign spouse can stand for President. This will pave way for former Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed, who is married to a Malaysian, contest the Presidential Elections of this year. Other than Saeed, so far President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Islamic Democratic Party President Umar Naseer has officially declared that they will be in the running for President this year. Male Member of Parliament Ibrahim "Ibra" Ismail, who is trying to form his own political party, has also hinted that he may run in the Presidential race.
Excepting the last Clause of the 18-Clause Chapter on the President of the Republic, at yesterday morning's sitting of the Majlis, the Speaker had called for a vote on all other Clauses.
However, Clause 10 which describes the authorities and responsibilities of the President, and Clause 17 relating to the President facing a permanent handicap, were sent back to the Drafting Committee.
At yesterday's sitting the Majlis also adopted a motion which requires the President to declare a running mate.
The Majlis amended the Constitution to state that the head of State, Government and the Armed Forces shall be the President.
The amended Constitution now gives power to the President to appoint and dismiss the Cabinet and staff who help to carry out Presidential duties.
The President shall also head all Cabinet meetings, declare war and peace, and send such declarations to the People's Majlis, the Parliament, for implementation. The President also has been given the authority to declare State of Emergencies.
The amended Constitution states that the Vice President shall carry out any duties tasked to him or her by the President, and that the Vice President shall perform as Acting President in cases where the President is temporarily unable to carry out his duties.
