MALE, January 16, 2008 (Haveeru News Service) -- The civil court has passed a verdict evicting tenants who had overpowered their landlady and had forcibly been using the landlady's home and possessions.

Ahmed Najeeb, the magistrate of Meemu atoll Kolhufushi's court who is currently working at the Civil Court in Male, on January 7 passed a verdict to evict four people from the house Rafraf in Male after its owner Aishath Ibrahim Maniku filed a case charging that the four had taken possession of her home by force.

The court passed a verdict to evict Ibrahim Shareef and Ibrahim Afeef (from Male) and Maryam Ali (from Thaa atoll Thimarafushi) and Yoosuf Hussain (from Laamu atoll Kunahandhoo).

Afeef works at Maldives Customs Service and is a lawyer who tends to civil cases. He is also an MP for Baa atoll at the People's Special Majlis, the interim constitutional assembly tasked with amending the Constitution.

Maryam and Yoosuf were sentenced in absentia.

The case filed by Aishath stated that Shareef and Afeef had taken over her home and refused access to the house to Aishath's representatives.

Shareef refuted the charges but the verdict stated that Male Municipality records clearly showed that the house belonged to Aishath.

The court's verdict states that Shareef, Afeef and all other persons currently living at the home have to clear the house of their belongings and hand over the house to Aishath within 15 days.
