The Deputy Director General of TAM, Mohamed Nazih, said that the websites that were blocked under instructions from the Islamic Affairs Ministry were some sites that contained articles about Islam, sites published in Dhivehi that promoted and discussed Christianity, and some anti-Islamic sites. Among the known sites that were blocked include http://raajjeislam.com and www.randomreflexions.com, the personal website of a local blogger.
The Raajje Islam site had been blocked after the audio recording of a speech given by Iman of Shaviyani atoll Foakaidhoo against State Minister for Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed had been made available on the site.
Other sites that were blocked include www.gospelgo.com, http://feydhooschool.info, and seedhahithun.com.
The website http://feydhooschool.info was blocked at the request of the Feydhoo School senior officials due to the offensive content on the website and Seedhahithun.com had been blocked because it was a Christian missionary website which contained Dhivehi translations of materials which promoted Christianity, Nazih said.
Nazih further said that it was TAM’s responsibility to ban the websites that the Government asked to be banned and that they didn’t check to see what the banned websites contained.
The Islamic Affairs Ministry confirmed that they had requested TAM to block access to some anti-Islamic websites.
