Six Maldivian students among world's best in IGCSE O’levels

Shaahid Hassan, Ihusaan Adam and Ahmed Nashvaan Abdul Matheen of Majeediya School, Afaaf Mohamed Saeed of Aminiya School, Abdullah Alsan Athif of Dharumavantha School and individual candidate Fathmath Hulvaa Haleel recieved awards for their world's best performance on Monday.
The Education Ministry also announced that another 33 Maldivian students were among the IGCSE world Top 10. Seven of them were from Majeediyya School, eight students from Aminiya School, four from Faafu atoll Education Center, two students from Dharumavantha School and a student each from Raa atoll Education Center, Muhibbuddin School, Thaa atoll Kinbidhoo School, and Haa Alifu atoll Education Center. An individual candidate was also included in the list.
At Monday's ceremony, 284 school leavers received awards for achieving local Top 10 status. Twenty-four of them confirmed first place after securing A grade in eight subjects. They were from Aminiya School, Majeediyya School, Dharumavantha School, Jalaaludheen School in Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi, Shaviyani atoll Milandhoo, Gnaviyani atoll Education Center, Alifu Dhaalu atoll Education Center, Laamu atoll Education Center and Baa atoll Education Center.
More than 7,000 students from 165 schools took the Cambridge O’level examination last year. Among them, 152 schools were from the atolls while 12 were from Male’ and 44 schools were in the Top 10 list. Although the number of students who sat the exam last year had decreased considerably from 2007, the number of students who achieved top ten results had increased.
Ahmadiyya School once again achieved first place after scoring 113 points in Academic Performance Score (APS) in last years O’level examination. This is the fourth year in a row the school has taken first place. The number of Ahmadiyya students who took the examination last year was notably more than that in 2007. While 200 students sat for the exam, 95 percent of them achieved passes in more than 5 subjects. The Education Ministry awarded the school a special prize on the accomplishment.
Aminiya School, Dharumavantha School, Lhaviyani atoll Education Center, Meemu atoll Education Center, Shaviyani Atoll School and Dhiffushi School also achieved high marks in APS.
The awards were given out to the students by President Mohamed Nasheed, Education Minister Doctor Mustafa Lutfi and other senior members of the Government.
