After the provisional results of two ballot boxes in Thaa atoll Thimarafushi were annulled by the High Court following the recent parliamentary elections, a second election commenced in the island on Saturday.

Voting took place under strict security measure provided by the Maldives National Defence Force’s Star Force. The No. 1 ballot box is located in the hall of the island’s Atoll Education Centre, while the second ballot box is kept in the hall at the Youth Centre around the road nearly 20 feet away.

The total number of people registered to vote at the two ballot boxes in the island is 932. The total votes from the other two islands in the Thimarafushi constituency (Guraidhoo and Gaadhiffushi) from the official results of the 9 May election shows that Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party candidate Ghassan Maumoon has the clear advantage with a difference of 210 votes over the Maldivian Democratic Party candidate Mohamed Mustafa.
