Eight-month-old baby beaten to death in Malé

An eight-month-old baby who had been severely beaten up died Thursday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

The Head of the Maldives Police Service’s General Investigations Unit, Inspector Hamdhoon Rasheed said that the baby had been in the taken under the protective custody of the Gender Ministry last Tuesday and had been treated at the IGMH. The baby had suffered severe wounds to its neck from a sharp object or fingernails, he said. The baby had also suffered brain hemorrhaging and other internal injuries due to the beating, and added that sexual abuse was also suspected due to rectal bleeding, Hamdhoon said.

He further said that the Police had arrested three people – the baby’s mother, her boyfriend and another man – in connection to the baby’s death. They are Noorzaada Ali, 28, of Silver Leaf / Seenu atoll Hithadhoo, Mohamed Waheed, 46, and another unidentified man.

Hamdhoon said that the baby had been taken to the Hospital by Mohamed Waheed and added that the three people had been arrested inside while they were inside the Hospital. The father of the child is currently serving a prison sentence.

The three people had tested positive for the presence of morphine when their urine was tested, Hamdhoon said. The presence of morphine indicates that they were heroin addicts. Police said that Noorzada had previous criminal records for drug abuse and stealing.
