Tough year ahead for Attorney General

It’s nearly a year since the new Constitution was ratified and put into effect. Although many news laws considered high priority are being drafted under the new Constitution, many more still remain unrealized, and that’s not even counting the unresolved bills that the Attorney General’s office inherited from the 16th People’s Majlis.

Husnu Suood, the most recent successor of the Attorney General’s position, said that he had already planned out and was working towards drafting the most important laws required by the Constitution. Drafting laws and submitting it for the Government’s approval is one of the mandates of the Attorney General’s office and Husnu Suood admits that he has a very busy and tough year ahead of him.

“There is a lot of work to be done,” he said. “But I foresee bright prospects for the year.”

Suood’s vision for the Government’s legislative agenda is to be able to submit 120 bills to the President’s Office for approval from the Majlis before the end of the year. He also said that even if he was able to submit 80 of the most important bills to the Government then it would be a huge success for the year’s legislative agenda.

The Attorney General also will have his hands full with the numerous bills that require amendments and trying to bridge the rift between various political parties. One of the 18 bills that were returned to Attorney General’s office from the previous People’s Majlis is the large Penal Code bill which includes over 900 articles. Since all those bills require a considerable amount of time to research and draft, the Attorney General can’t afford to waste any time if the bills are to be drafted in time, especially with half the year already behind him.

“That may be as it is, but we still have the capacity to do it,” Husnu Suood said. “In addition, we will also be outsourcing some of the work and there are plenty volunteers too. And with all the talented lawyers at our disposal this office is a very capable and efficient place.”
