The family of the first diagnosed Maldivian swine flu victim has filed complaints with the Health Ministry.

The Director General of Health Services Dr Ibrahim Yasir said last Thursday that the infected woman was receiving treatment at the quarantine centre in Hulhulé and that her family had filed three complaints with the Ministry, expressing their dissatisfaction at the way the situation had been handled. One of the complaints was that the woman had been left alone in the back of the vehicle when she was being transported to Hulhulé. The other two complaints were that the caretakers had not considered the fact that she was diabetic when meals were served, and that the TV near her bed at the quarantine centre was turned off.

Dr Yasir said the several institutions were responsible for taking care of the quarantined woman, but that the Health Ministry was monitoring the situation. He said that it had not been their intention to keep her isolated in the back of the vehicle when she was transported to Hulhulé, but that there had not been any other vehicles available at the time. He further said that her meals were sent to her from Malé and that her dinner had been delayed one night and they had not been able to arrange a meal suitable for a diabetic that one time. He also addressed the issue of the TV and said that it had now been turned on.

“Those things happened not because we were careless about her,” he said. “However, we have taken carefully considered the complaints and taken necessary steps.”

The Health Ministry said everyone who had come into contact with her was being tested for swine flu after she was diagnosed with the disease last Monday. Dr Yasir said that seven people who had shown symptoms of the disease after coming into contact with her had been tested for Influenza-A, but that the tests had been negative. The woman is now recovering and would be released after being quarantined there for seven days, the Health Ministry said. - HNS
