Over 8,000 expatriate workers in Maldives registered themselves under the expatriate registration program conducted by the Human Resource Ministry last month, the Minister of Human Resources has said.

Speaking at a news conference held at Dharubaaruge on Wednesday, the Human Resource Minister Hassan Latheef said that 6,637 expatriate workers had registered in Malé alone since the program commenced on 1 June. A further 1,352 expatriates registered with the Ministry from the atolls via the Police Stations, he said.

The Minister also said that 4,041 of those who had registered had been working under expired work permits.

“We’ve seen it portrayed on TV and newspapers that the objective of the program was to find and register all the expatriate workers who were in the country illegally and then release them into Malé,” Latheef said, adding that it had caused some difficulty for the registration program.

The Minister said that the fear promoted in the media made expatriates think twice about registering and made employers hesitant about hiring the expatriates’ services.

“Since even some Government offices seem to cultivate the theory I would just like to mention that those expatriates who register won’t have a criminal record,” he said. “We won’t hand over expatriates with a criminal record to any employer.”
