A Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Gadhdhoo man diving in the lagoon of Gaafu Alifu atoll Kooddoo on Sunday died shortly after surfacing from the dive.
Ali Shareef, 41, of Abadah Fehi, died on Sunday morning after diving in the lagoon, hunting for lobsters, with another group of men from Gadhdhoo. Police quoted the crew of the boat Shareef was on as saying that Shareef had surfaced and climbed aboard the boat while clutching his chest.
“Apparently, a white liquid then started coming out from his mouth and nose,” the Police official said. “The crew then quickly took him to the hospital.”
Police said that Shareef had been dead by the time he was taken to the Gaafu Alifu atoll hospital. Police further said that Shareef had not received any proper training in diving and that the boat they had gone on the diving trip had not been equipped with proper safety equipment.
Shareef is survived by a wife and two children.
