A Bill proposing that the Ramadan bonus specified in the Employment Act be given to only those employees in Maldives who were Muslim has been accepted by the People’s Majlis and submitted to the Economic Committee for further study.

After the discussion of the Bill was finished, it was passed with the approval of 39 of the 44 MPs in attendance at the Majlis on Tuesday. The Bill stipulates that a bonus allowance of Rf2,000 be given to every Muslim staff during the month of Ramadan.

During the discussion about the Bill, Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ahmed Easa said that since the Ramadan bonus was a special allowance being given in connection to a religious duty being performed by Muslims, it wasn’t acceptable that the bonus should also be given to non-Muslims. Easa said that the Ramadan bonus should only be given to those who performed the religious duty during the special month, and since non-Muslims did not participate they should not be entitled to the bonus.
