According to the source, Police had on Wednesday visited the house where the 17-year-old concubine lived and questioned the girl. The source also said that the girl was pregnant.
The news of the underage concubine had been revealed to the public by former Attorney General Azima Shukoor during a Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party rally held at the Artificial Beach on the night of 13 September. The news had become a major issue and was duly being investigated when the Islamic Affairs Ministry recently denounced the report as a hoax. Not long after that, the Human Rights Commission of Maldives confirmed that the news of the concubine was true, but did not reveal any more information about the case as their investigation was still ongoing.
According to the Haveeru source, the girl was the younger sister of a man who had been sentenced to prison for clashing with security forces during the disturbance at North Ari Atoll Himandhoo in 2007. The girl is supposedly ‘married’ to a young man, although the marriage had not been registered in Maldives. Haveeru has found out that the ‘marriage’ had taken place in India.
Further, Haveeru discovered that the underage concubine was finally located based on information found in the records at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. The report of the ‘underage concubine’ was first brought to the attention of Maldivians in July by freelance journalist Hilath Rasheed in his blog. In his blog, Hilath stated that the information about the concubine had been shared with him by a source who wished to remain anonymous. The source had found out about the concubine from the doctor who had attended to the girl when she was brought to IGMH. She was accompanied by a woman wearing a full veil which kept her face hidden.
When the doctor said that he suspected that the girl had been sexually abused, the woman wearing the veil had said that the girl was a concubine kept by her husband. The doctor had not reported the incident to relevant authorities.
