Transport network for two provinces handed over to joint venture company

Passengers onboard a ferry travelling from Male’ to Hulhumale’. Under the contract signed between the Government and Trinus-CAE, a high-speed ferry specially designed for operations in the provinces will be crafted and put into service within two months or so.

The Government on Thursday signed a 50-year contract with a joint venture company, handing over the project to establish a transport network in Mathi Uthuru (Upper North) Province and Mathi Dhekunu (Upper South) Province.

Advisor of the Transport Ministry, Adnan Ali, said on Saturday that the contract for a transport network in the two provinces had been handed over to joint venture company created between a Maldivian company and a South African company called Trinus-CAE Holdings Pvt Ltd. The Upper North Province includes the atolls Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani atoll. The Upper South Province includes Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls.

“When we opened for bid proposals last year on 27 November, the company submitted the proposal for a transport network for the South Province, Upper South Province, and Upper North Province,” Adnan said. “However they were given only the Upper North and Upper South Province.”

Adnan further said that the company were going to establish a transport network in the two provinces using a specially designed high-speed craft and that the service will begin sometime within the next two months or so.

At the ceremony held at Dharubaaruge last Thursday, the contract was signed on behalf of the Maldivian Government by Transport Minister Mohamed Aslam and the Economic Minister Mohamed Rasheed. Managing Director of Trinus Ismail Saamih signed on behalf of the joint venture company.
