High risky behavior which could be a major factor to the spread of HIV is very common in Maldives, a survey conducted in the country has shown.

The 2008-2009 survey conducted jointly by the UNDP, the Maldivian Government, Society for Health Education (SHE), and Journey, shows that even though HIV wasn’t spreading in Maldives, the risk factors were very high. Half of the results of the survey were publicized last Thursday.

According to the survey, high risk behaviors common in Maldives include drug injectors sharing the same needle, having multiple sexual partners and frequent changing of sexual partners, and men not using protection during sexual encounters with prostitutes. These are the major contributing factors that have made HIV such a widespread disease in neighbouring countries also.

A campaign geared towards creating awareness about high risk behavior conducive to the spread of HIV was launched on Thursday night. The media campaign, aimed towards changing such behavior and protecting people from HIV, was inaugurated by Health Minister Dr Aminath Jameel. The main target of the campaign, which will include radio and TV programs in addition to posters, are the youth.
