The Ministry’s Deputy Director Abdul Samad Abdul Rahman said on Sunday that three specialist doctors from abroad and six expatriate medical officers had gone back to their own country during the last two months, citing difficulty in staying in Maldives due to the reduced salaries. He further said that some new doctors that were arranged to be brought to Maldives were now declining to come due to the lower wages.
Samad said that due to the reduction, they were receiving many complaints from foreign doctors working in Maldives, adding that there had been indication that many more foreign doctors would resign if the salaries did not improve.
“Mostly it’s the doctors working in the islands that are resigning,” he said. “Due to that it has become really difficult to provide services in some places.”
Due to the resignations, some hospitals in Maldives don’t provide specialist services.
Zubair Mohamed, the CEO of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, the largest hospital in Maldives, said that due to no doctor from the hospital had so far resigned as a direct result of the wage reductions.
“I would have to say that this is just a normal occurrence,” he said. “Doctors are always leaving because their contract has expired or for other reasons.”
