The Indonesian vessel named “Permata 212” caught on fire around 3:30am and the fire was extinguished by the Coast Guard around 5:00am. By then a large part of the fishing vessel had been destroyed by the fire. Police said that there were three crew members onboard the vessel when the fire started, but they had managed to escape the fire by climbing aboard a nearby boat.
Police said that the cause of the fire was still undetermined but that they were investigating the incident. An official from the Maldives National Defence Force said on Sunday that even though the fire was extinguished they were still using pumps to pump out the flood waters threatening to sink the vessel.
However, despite their efforts, the vessel sank into the sea on Monday morning.
