In his weekly radio address, the president said the subsidy will be granted for 16.21 percent of the household, assuring government would remove the burden on the people who struggled with bills
“So, the government would assist those unable to pay their electricity bills,” he said. “The government would make the commitment without disrupting the people.”
But a week ago, the president said 18,000 electricity metres are used in the households, and 11,000 households are in need for electricity subsidy, adding 60 percent of the households are entitled to get subsidy.
The president said earlier many people were not much informed about the electricity tariffs hike in Male’ and the procedure to get subsidy.
As a result government has now informed the procurement, he said.
“Now we have started receiving the forms applied for electricity subsidy... the government will hopefully eliminate the burden on the people who struggled with bills” he said. “That’s how we want to achieve it.”
In his address, the president also explained the government’s decision to give loans for students to get higher studies in abroad.
The loans should be repaid after completing studies in long term basis, he said.
“Extending the period for ten years is a thing that the government can do,” he said. “So, we have taken it to our consideration. We want as many youth to get higher study opportunities.”
