KABUL, March 23, 2010 (AFP) - A NATO military helicopter crashed Tuesday in southern Afghanistan, an Afghan official said, but there was no immediate confirmation of casualties.
The crash happened as two helicopters were landing at a Turkish Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Wardak province, south of Kabul, Shahidullah Shahid, spokesman for the provincial governor, told AFP.
He said one of the helicopters, which both belonged to NATO member Turkey, crashed into a hillside near the PRT while the other landed safely.
"The helicopter crashed in the Women's Garden in Wardak city and at this stage we know nothing about any possible casualties," he said.
A witness said that the chopper's rotor blades had apparently clipped the side of the hill, after which it began to spin out of control while hovering just above the ground.
The helicopter kept spinning as it veered towards the Women's Garden, about a kilometre (half a mile) from the PRT, the witness, Mohammad Zarif, said.
NATO had no immediate comment, but a spokesman said checks were being made.
