In the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, the government has decided to impose a total ban on trade and export of sharks and shark products, the President’s Office said.

The decision was made in the cabinet meeting chaired by Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, after discussions among the members.

The ministers discussed earlier in the cabinet meeting held on 23rd February, on imposing a total ban on shark fishing by March 1, 2010 and decided to re-submit a paper concerning the matter to the cabinet within 14 days.

In yesterday’s meeting, the ministers deliberated on the paper submitted to the cabinet and decided to enforce the decision on banning shark fishing in the Maldives commencing from March 1, 2010.

According to the President’s Office, the cabinet decided to ban shark-fishing beginning from July 1, and the Fisheries Ministry would facilitate in finding alternative employment opportunities to the families depended on shark fishing.

Meanwhile, the cabinet decided that the Maldives would ratify the Convention on Establishment of South Asian Regional Standards Organisation (SARSO), as it was already signed in August of 2008 in 15th SAARC Summit.

One of the key objectives of this convention is to develop equal standards for the region to facilitate intra-regional trade, President’s Office said.

The members emphasised that with the ratification of this agreement, consumer confidence on Maldivian local products and the products imported to Maldives from SAARC countries would improve and that the Maldives would get assistance from SARSO in formulating national standards.
