Irufan, Maujood qualify for second round of Maldives International Badminton Challenge

Irufan, who is locally ranked six beat Chulan Jayakodiarachchi of Sri Lanka by two sets, 21-10 and 21-16. Irufan will compete against Petr Koukal of Czech Republic, who was automatically qualified for the second round.
Maujood beat Senavirathne Kasun of Sri Lanka by 21-13 and 21-12. He will contend against Pakistani Wajid Ali Chaudhry in the second round.
Five Maldivian players lost the chance to compete in the second round. Ibrahim Shamiu lost the game by 14-21 and 9-21 to Rizwan Azam of Pakistan. Mohamed Shabeem lost to Sri Lankan Eranga Fernando by 4-21 and 5-21. Mohamed Hamdhan played against Sangkalpa Gunawardana of Sri Lanka but lost by 6-21 and 2-21. Mohamed Nashfan lost to Indian Oscar Bansal by 16-21 and 6-21. Mohamed Mazin did not qualify for the second round, as he did not show up to the game against Antonio Benjamin Gadi of Philippines.
Aishath Afnan Rasheed, Aishath Shahurunaz Moosa and Rayah Rasheed have been automatically qualified for the second round. Aminath Ahmed Didi lost to Japan’s Chinamo Okui by 5-21 and 1-21. Neela Ahmed Najeeb played against Achini Nimeshika and lost by 12-21 and 8-21.
President Mohamed Nasheed inaugurated the tournament Wednesday morning. Speaking at the function, President said he was happy that such a tournament was being held in the Maldives and wished the players luck.
The knockout championship consists of five categories of individual events; Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
US$15,000 (Rf192,750) worth prize money will be awarded in total and the champions will get the chance to spend holidays in a Maldives resort.
