MALE, July 18, 2010 (HNS) – The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has advised British travelling Maldives to exercise caution in the current political unrest in the country.

A revised travel advice issued Sunday notes that a number of political protests and demonstrations predominately outside government buildings and political figures’ residences in Male are ongoing, following a period of political unrest within the parliament. Social unrest is possible and there is a risk demonstrations might become violent, the statement added.

“You should exercise caution and avoid any large political gatherings,” the travel advice cautioned.

Violent clashes erupted across the capital between supporters of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the opposition Wednesday evening. Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) took opposition Mulaku MP Abdulla Yamin into "protective custody.”
