MALE, July 19, 2010 – The fundraising football event organised by Tiny Hearts of Maldives (THM), a local NGO helping children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) gathered Rf265,000, the organisation revealed Sunday.

Over 100 celebrities, including male and female presenters, actors, and vocalists participated in the “Save a Tiny Heart” campaign aimed at raising funds for the heart surgeries of 20 children.

At the appreciation ceremony held at Holiday Inn Male, THM noted that the amount was greater than expected, but added it was insufficient for the surgeries of 20 patients.

The NGO identified more cases of the disease during the campaign and funds will be distributed among 26 children based on the level of urgency, THM member Fiunaz Waheed said.

“We noted earlier that we might not be able to help all 20 children as the amount is so high. So we formed a committee which included doctors and members of our team. The committee decided to donate the money to these 26 kids after comparing their conditions,” she announced.

The organisation identified 46 new cases of CHD during the event, bringing the total number of registered patients to 171.

“Our aim was to provide some sort of assistance to 20 patients. As the surgery costs US$3500-7000, some parents are unable to do the surgery for their kids even when they reach four years of age, despite hard work. Our objective was to encourage them by giving some support,” Fiunaz said.

Pediatrician Dr Fathimath Niyasha, noted that Congenital Heart Disease is a concerning issue in Maldives considering its population and noted that the country lacks the necessary treatment and screening.

“The most advisable way is to give birth to such kids at a place where there are facilities. The normal ultrasound scan rarely identifies this disease. So foetal echo scan is required, which is not available in Maldives,” she said.
