MALE, July 21, 2010 (HNS) – Speaker Abdulla Shahid on Wednesday cancelled sittings indefinitely as the government continued its refusal to release opposition Mulaku MP Abdulla Yamin for parliament meetings.

The decision was recommended by opposition parties in a consultation session unattended by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). MDP was not represented in the meeting because its parliamentary leader ‘Reeko’ Moosa Manik had another appointment, Shahid said.

The Speaker revealed that Defence Minister Ameen Fisal had rejected a request to bring Yamin – who is in Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) “protective custody” – for Wednesday’s session also.

The indefinite termination of sittings marks a week of parliament deadlock as Yamin’s detention entered day eight.

MNDF deployed armed personnel on July 14 taking Yamin away to Aarah island after violent clashes between government and opposition supporters outside his home.

The armed forces flunked an order to bring Yamin to Criminal Court to determine the legitimacy of his detention and refused to cooperate with the court to conduct a hearing in his absentia.
