MALE, July 22, 2010 (HNS) – Maldives has presented a report on the ship that carried the famous French historian François Pyrard de Laval, who wrote a historical record of the Maldives around four centuries ago, to the international community.

According to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the joint report compiled by MNDF and Centre for Historical Researches late last year includes details and photographs of the ship that wrecked near Baa Atoll Goidhoo.

Major Mohamed Ibrahim said the research was done to preserve the historical records of the country. He, however, noted that preserving historical sites and items is difficult due to the high cost.

Historians claim that the ship wrecked on the reef of Goidhoo in 1602. MNDF, however, said it is now located near the place and added the spot can be observed clearly.

Major Ibrahim noted that MNDF officers dived into the area and studied the ship’s direction and its navigation.
