According to the bank, the name was selected from a list proposed by the public via Television Maldives’ (TVM) ‘Heyyanbo’ show.
“This is a very Maldivian-style name which is very much representative of this service,” MMA Governor Fazeel Najeeb said.
An MMA official said it is trying to launch the US$8 million (Rf102 million) mobile banking system on February 1. The central bank will only act as the system operator, the official added.
“We plan to hand over the system to another party after three years to operate. Banks will provide the service, with MMA operating the system,” he said.
The official noted that a system charge and a bank charge would be taken from the user.
“We will only take a [system] charge for system maintenance and to cover the loan. Banks will charge another fee for the services they provide,” he said.
“We provide the service to the banks and the banks provide the service to the customers.”
Monteyran, a United States company is currently installing the necessary systems.
