Departments and sections of the offices scattered across Male will be centralised at the new building.
“Education Ministry is a vast ministry. Departments located on the second floor of Ghaazee Building, Boudge and Maathila has been transferred to the new building. So I would say that the ministry’s functioning will improve a lot as the employees working at the two floors will be able to work very closely. They can work together collaboratively without having to exchange letters every time,” Permanent Secretary at Education Ministry, Dr Amal Ali told Haveeru.
A Civil Service Commission (CSC) official said the building has brought the commission closer to many other civil service sector institutions.
“We had to face a lot of difficulties when we used to work at two separate buildings. The public got our offices mixed up. For example, several people who had to go to the other building used to come to our building. But now it would be much easier as we are on the same floor. We can provide the services much better due to this change,” the official said.
Department of Immigration and Emigration, Ministry of Human Resources, Youth and Sports, Department of National Registration, Tourism Ministry, Attorney General’s Office, Fisheries Ministry, Education Ministry, Home Ministry, Transport and Communications Ministry and Civil Service Commission (CSC) have been transferred to the Rf230 million building.
An official of Housing Ministry in-charge of the building said it would accommodate around 1,500 employees.
The parking area at the basement occupies118 motorcycles at a time.
The building would house a shop and a café on the ground floor.
Deputy Housing Minister Akram Kamaaluddin, however, said the building was not designed most conveniently. The allocation of offices does not provide enough space, he added.
“Construction costs of the building more than doubled. A lot of land is wasted too,” he said.
“Velaanage” office building has five lifts including a service lift, a backup generator system and a centralised air conditioning system.
