Thasmeen told Haveeru Saturday “DRP welcomes holding an election,” but said certain matters should be decided prior to it in the ongoing peace talks between the government and the opposition.
He noted the party do not have any objections to amend articles of the constitution that deals with the election.
“An election cannot be held without amending the constitution. We do not have any problem in amending articles which deal with elections. I do not want to personally comment on any other matter, as they are being discussed in the main talks,” Kendhoo MP Thasmeen said.
He stressed that certain things should be ensured in order to have a free and a fair election.
In a ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally held Wednesday evening, President Mohamed Nasheed said he was ready to go for parliamentary and presidential elections if the opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) agrees to amend the constitution and projected that an election will be held around July 11, 2011. The President, in his weekly radio address Friday said a presidential election would be held after a parliamentary election.
When asked whether DRP will agree to a parliamentary election as well, Thasmeen said comment would be made after the talks.
Meanwhile, DRP coalition partner People’s Alliance (PA) welcomed a mid-term election. However, PA along with the opposition alliance insisted that Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik must also give assurance that he would go for re-election alongside President Nasheed.
