Government proposes June, July early elections

A senior official of the party involved in the ongoing peace talks confirmed the decision.
Haveeru understands that MDP plans to propose a list of 16 demands to the negotiating table for the opposition’s consideration, including two early elections next year.
President Mohamed Nasheed earlier said he was ready for re-election if the opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) agrees to amend the constitution and hold parliamentary elections first.
MDP is also set to propose amending the constitution by March 2011 and endorsing the cabinet before August 23 after revising the parliament’s rules of procedure.

MALE, August 1, 2010 (HNS) – The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to propose parliamentary elections for June 2011 with a presidential election following in July.
