On Sunday Speaker Abdulla Shahid cancelled the first sitting held after a week-long break giving room for talks among parties and parliamentary committee meetings. He, however, announced the parliament will reconvene Monday.
But political parties said the deadlock could end only through the ongoing peace talks between the government and the opposition.
The third session of talks was cancelled Saturday, due to a confusion of time for both parties.
DRP Leader also Kendhoo MP Ahmed Thasmeen Ali told Haveeru that resolving matters externally could resume the functioning of the parliament.
“We could not hold the talks planned for yesterday. So we cannot decide on matters that should be settled yesterday. So we wanted to proceed with those talks. Solving matters through dialogue is better than doing it in the parliament floor. Besides, things that should be agreed upon in the transition period are at committee stage. So when we were consulted, we decided that it would be better to hold talks outside the parliament. We are trying to find a solution for the problems even during the sitting hours,” he said.
MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, also Hulhu-Henveiru MP ‘Reeko’ Moosa Manik agreed, but added that the main issue was endorsing cabinet ministers.
“They cannot do everything the way they want just because they have parliamentary majority. DRP/PA have done one thing their way. They obstructed parliament sittings because one of their leaders was at Aarah. We want to go along the line of public interest through negotiations. There is no other way for the opposition,” Moosa warned.
