Opposition delegates attended the talks at 4pm and waited 10 minutes for representatives of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). MDP officials, however, came to the parliament house moments after the opposition team left.
Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam from the MDP delegation told Haveeru his team understood that the session was set for 4.30pm.
“Our representative met with their representative this morning [Saturday]. We were told that the meeting would be at 4.30pm. So we attended the session at 4.30pm,” he said.
A joint statement issued Tuesday after the second session of the talks said the third session would be held at 4pm Saturday. But Aslam said the time was later changed. The opposition, however, denied the claim.
While the opposition made nine demands, MDP has decided to forward 16 to the table. They include holding a parliamentary election in June followed by a presidential election in July 2011. MDP also proposed to finish amending the constitution by March.
A new date for the cancelled session has not been announced.
