A police press release issued hours later said JSC was conducting “unconstitutional and unlawful activities” and explained the move was made on President Mohamed Nasheed’s decision according to article 115 of the constitution.
“The commission continued to work late in to the night and were still working when police intervened before official hours started at 8am,” a police spokesperson told Haveeru.
Police did not elaborate on the “activities” and cleared from the JSC office just after noon.
Aishath Velezinee, President Nasheed’s member on the commission, said JSC Sunday evening decided to administer oath to judges it had earlier approved for tenure.
Velezinee has been a strong critic of the judges appraisal process headed by Commissioner Mujthaz Fahmy.
Echoing her sentiments JSC member Shuaib Abdur Rahman earlier said judges deemed qualified included some with “very low standard.” He walked out of a JSC meeting in protest of the process.
Staff already inside JSC’s office stopped police at the reception area shared with Department of Judicial Administration. Incoming employees were blocked by police.
Police stopped members of the Police Integrity Commission from entering Theemuge which houses JSC, but allowed two officials of Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) in.
Prosecutor General (PG) Ahmed Muiz expressed concern over police’s move saying he would pursue necessary legal action.
“I will take the necessary legal actions without any hesitation and will see why this happened,” he said.
