MALE, August 3, 2010 (HNS) – Parliamentary National Security Committee Tuesday summoned heads of Maldives Police Service and Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS).

Opposition MP Ilham Ahmed who is on the committee said they were asked about gang activities.

“We questioned them over police intervention in political affairs and dealing with people unfairly. We also questioned them why police were proceeding with other cases, when a case of alleged corruption against a [ruling party] MP has been lodged. And we questioned them about the unlawful arrest of [opposition Mulaku MP Abdulla] Yamin. But police did not give any reasonable answers,” he said.

He stressed that police’s main concerns were pending laws and difficulties in patrolling Male.

“They said they had limited resources to give protection to businessmen, MPs, and judges,” Ilham said.

DPRS heads cited several issues, including the lack of appropriate prison facilities and budget constraints, he added.
