Speaking at a ceremony held to inaugurate the new intensive care unit (ICU) at Hulhumale Hospital, Dr Waheed said a number of patients who require intensive critical care were those injured in street violence and other gang-linked fights.
In two incidents Friday evening and Saturday morning, six people were stabbed, leaving a 17-year-old dead.
Six people including two minors are in custody for involvement in the violence, a police spokesperson said.
In a special operation carried out Sunday and Monday evening police arrested 59 people and confiscated suspected drugs, face masks and gloves from two guesthouses. Eleven of them now remain in custody, police said.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to contain and reduce violence on the streets, the Vice President highlighted the need to keep criminals and convicts in detention to reduce violence and gang fights.
Significant improvements have been made in prisons to increase security and space, he added.
Waheed also stressed the need for essential and emergency care for critically ill patients and said Hulhumale’s ICU service would reduce the number of patients who were referred to Male.
The ICU was established with assistance from the Pakistani government.
