MALE, September 15 (HNS) – The largest safari boat being built in Maldives burnt down in Raa atoll Alifushi after it caught fire Wednesday morning.
Deputy Island Chief Ahmed Zahir said police and armed forces put out the fire around 12pm.
Although the cause is still unknown, Zahir said the fire broke out in the safari boat owned by a foreign party and built by Mohamed Yousuf of Gulraunaage/Raa atoll Alifushi, after a resin container caught fire.
“When the container caught fire, [the people working on the boat] tried to extinguish it. Even after the fire broke out in the safari, they tried to extinguish it. But they left the safari when they were sure that the fire cannot be extinguished,” he said.
Haveeru was unable to contact Yousuf as he was not in the island. Sources from the island, however, put the loss to over US$2 million.
An islander who was trying to extinguish the fire burnt his hand badly. However, he was discharged from the island’s health centre after treatment.
Zahir stressed that the 165-foot long boat was 70 percent completed when it caught fire around 7.55am.
