MALE, September 24 (HNS) – Ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Friday called off its constituency elections due to technical issues.

The party started the vote to elect candidates for 77 constituencies via SMS at 2pm.

“The messages are not sent. So the candidates and voters requested to postpone it. The committee convened and decided to cancel it,” Secretary General Hassan Shah said.

“A new date will be announced after a committee meeting.”

President, vice president, treasurer, secretary and a secretary for advertisements and announcements will be elected for constituencies where the party does not represent in the parliament. The member who represents the party in the parliament will automatically be appointed to the president’s post in other constituencies.

Polling stations were set up at Kalaafaanu School in Male and the islands for unregistered members to vote via SMS.
