MALE, September 26 (HNS) – Government planned to introduce secondary classes in primary schools to overcome the overcrowding in grade eight, Education Ministry said.
Deputy Minister Dr Abdulla Nazeer said hundreds of students finish grade seven and are promoted to grade eight each year. Nazeer noted that grade eight classes become overcrowded when around 1400 students from five government primary schools in Male are divided into four secondary schools.
“Boys who complete grade seven will be transferred to Majeediyya and Dharumavantha and girls to Ameeniyya and Hiriya,” he said.
The Deputy Minister said putting “strangers” into one school instigates problems and leads to lack of attention to studies. Around 400 students are transferred to one secondary school and new classes should be introduced with a large number of students, he added.
While grades one to 10 are to be introduced in all schools in Male, some of the students passing grade seven will be transferred to other schools. The ministry aims to introduce around five grade eight classes in all government schools.
“For instance, some students will be kept in the school when we introduce grade eight in Kalaafaanu School. The remaining students will be distributed to other secondary schools,” he said.
According to the ministry, grade one coeducation classes will be introduced in Majeediyya and Ameeniyya. However, the ministry expects to implement grades one-10 in all secondary schools within seven years.
