MALE, October 24 (HNS) – Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) with United States military assistance started a workshop on Sunday to draft a national security framework.

According to the armed forces, the workshop which commenced at Customs Building is aimed at identifying security challenges faced by the Maldives and holding discussions among relevant authorities to find solutions for the challenges.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Defence Minister Amin Faisal said a national security framework would be drafted under the strategic action plan published by the President’s Office last year after discussions.

“As this is a national security framework, a meeting like this would not yield an effective framework. The framework should be discussed among the political parties, NGOs and the parliament and should be legally passed,” he said.

Brigadier General Abdulla Shamal told journalists that the workshop would consider internationally accepted practices and would discuss among relevant authorities.

State Home Minister Mohamed Aswan appealed all the institutions to corporate in the process.

“Most people think that national security is all about police and armed forces. But all the fields are connected to national security. For instance, it is the responsibility of all the institutions to determine the advantages and disadvantages of medical consumables imported to the Maldives and their safety,” he said.
