MALE, June 6 (HNS) – One of the three victims of the fire that broke out last evening during the barbecue at the terrace of Machangoalhi Meraanage is to be taken abroad for treatment, the family said today.
Aminath Arifa, who contested in 2009 parliamentary election as a candidate of the minor opposition Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP), was injured along with another woman and a Bangladeshi man, whose 90 percent of the body is burned.
A relative said the fire broke out as they used oil used to treat wood to enlarge the fire.
“The oil catches fire very easily,” the relative said.
“We have received the doctor certificate which allows sister [Aminath Arifa] to be sent abroad. We’re working on it.”
An official of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said the bottle that contained the oil exploded.
“The bottle reportedly caught fire and exploded while they were putting the oil in the fire. The expatriate worker, who was putting the oil, received the most severe injuries,” the official said.
The other two women caught fire while trying to put out the flames on the Bangladeshi man’s body, the official added.
