Maldives Transport and Contracting Company's (MTCC) board has decided to scrap its plan to hike Hulhumale ferry ticket price from Rf5 to Rf8 and Villimale ticket price to Rf5 from Rf3 commencing October 30.

MALE, September 27 (HNS) – Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has scrapped its plan to hike Hulhumale and Villimale ferry fares following mass protests and public criticism.

An MTCC official confirmed today that the company’s board had decided to dissolve the announcement made to increase ferry fares.

Haveeru, however, was unable to get details of the board’s decision as CEO Hussein Amr was not responding to phone calls.

MTCC announced on Thursday that the company would increase Hulhumale ticket price from Rf5 to Rf8 and Villimale ticket price to Rf5 from Rf3 commencing October 30.

The company was also to set a separate ferry to carry motorcycles from and to Hulhumale and charge Rf20, which includes the ticket price, for passengers carrying motorcycles on the ferry, which will be available every 30 minutes.

The announcement was met by vehement public criticism as protestors gathered at the Hulhumale ferry terminal on Friday and Villimale ferry terminal Saturday, which led to the company to suspend the ferry services.

Transport Ministry and Male City Council, meanwhile, announced their plan to re-open for bidding the ferry services provided in Male region.
