History

As the first Maldivian newspaper to go online, in January 1997, Haveeru Daily has been using new communications technology for newsgathering, production and distribution. Even before internet services were launched in Maldives in October 1996, Haveeru has setup a Bulletin Board System, HaveeruNet, for people to access news and engage with other users online. In 1994, HaveeruNet was launched and it became a popular platform to view and download local and world news. HaveeruNet’s popularity convinced us to setup a web-based online news service in January 1997.

Haveeru Online: Redefined

We welcome users to the next-generation Haveeru Online website that has been designed to give better user-experience. It is built with many interactive features, and allows users to engage in the news and participate in the discussions. The redefined and redesigned website is a platform for news, opinion, entertainment, discussion and social interaction.

One of the key new features in Haveeru Online is integration of social media, facilitating users to engage in the Haveeru community. We have created a special Profile Page for users who want to contribute to news stories, participate, and engage in the discussions. Through this section users can keep track of their comments and followers.

We have also integrated an advertising module so that our advertising partners can book and place advertisements online and monitor the impressions to their advertisements through real-time statistics. More features would be added to the advertising module with time.

User Profile Page: Going Social

To have own Profile Page, users need to register with Haveeru Online, which would enhance their online news experience. Registered users would be able to comment to news and follow other users. New features that would enable users to contribute to Haveeru Online would be introduced in stages. Users would also be able to change their profile photos/avatar, and can log on to the Profile Page using Facebook login.

To recognize the contributions from users, we have introduced a Badge system. For every 10, 25, 50 and 100 comments published, the user would be able to unlock Comments Badges. Users will also be able to give badges to outstanding comments from commenters. At present we have two user-badges – Fakka and Salhi.

More interactive and social features would be made available soon through the Profile Page including options for user-generated content, invitations to participate in news assignments.
