India has called on the political parties of the Maldives to refrain from actions that disrupt the harmony of the nation and lead to unrest.

Citing the Indian External Affairs Ministry the Press Trust of India stated that India is willing and ready to extend all help necessary to curb the political unrest brewing in the Maldives.

“India is concerned about the escalating political tension in the Maldives. The Indian government calls on all the political parties in the Maldives to refrain from any action that might disrupt the harmony of the country and lead to unrest,” the Spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry said.

The Spokesperson said that India has been closely monitoring the events in the country following the change of government on February 7.

The European Union (EU) has also expressed concern regarding the current Maldivian situation.

In a statement issued by the EU last Thursday the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said that “the political situation will worsen and have undesired effects on the lives of the Maldivian people if political unrest prolongs followed by Police brutality and filing charges against political leaders.”
